Young Oaks Destroyed by Vandals

On the night of Saturday 10/11/2012 another young oak tree was destroyed in the park by vandals. The tree, which had been planted along the diagonal path between the pavilion garden and the playground and was well established, had been snapped and twisted off at the base. This is the second tree along the path to be destroyed in the same way. Both trees were paid for by The Friends of Cottenham Park 3 years ago.  

The park gates are locked at dusk and The Friends appeal for residents in adjacent properties to report any night time disturbances directly to the police.

Railings Theft

In the early morning of Saturday 21st January, ten sections of railings along Melbury Gardens were stolen. 
The Friends of Cottenham Park obtained a grant from Viridor Waste Management to fund the installation of these railings.
Merton council have since replaced the missing sections, however, continued vigilance by all would be appreciated.

Park Locking to Continue

I am forwarding you the message below from Councillor Rod Scott . Very good news indeed ( for now ! )
We must express our thanks to all the local councillors and to RAWW who opposed the proposal to leave the parks unlocked, and to all of you who wrote so many letters. They were noticed and commented on.

Mo Hammond is contacting Dave Byles ( parks manager) to see what the situation is re us unlocking the parks April to October -- as we have been doing . Mo will be in touch soon.

I am pleased to be able to say that at the Council budget meeting last night, alternative savings were found to enable the present arrangement of locking parks and gardens at night to continue for another year. This `reprieve` will enable discussions between the Friends groups, residents associations and others, with the council to take place with a view to finding a longer term solution while the present needs to find large council money savings continue. For example, this may be `remote locking`, the possibility of which will be examined.

At the same meeting, the council proposal that only one Community Forum meeting per year in each area, including Raynes Park, would be supported by the council, was modified to provide some support for the other three forum meetings per year if communities (as I believe we will wish to do in Raynes Park) themselves wish to continue with such forums as a means of community engagement and communication.
